I really don't think about it…I just do it 'cause it is kinda fun to kick off your heels a bit and lets your feet relax a bit. Most Murano glass is made by lamp working. It's possible to do lamp working at home if you have a fire proof studio.
Your friend will ideally need a lampworking torch, usually and best an oxy-propane torch.
A kiln is not essential, but extremely useful for annealing. Small is fine as long as whatever you made can fit in.
Just tell your friend to research lamp working. Generally taking a class will be the by far best way to go. It will answer a lot of questions and familiarize with essential equipment and provide safety training. It will avoid a lot of frustrations if things don't work out because of wrong technique, there is somebody you can ask, and you don't have to worry that the equipment is working as it should. And it can save a lot of money in the case that during your lamp working class you realize it's not really the hobby for you… setting up a glass shop is more expensive than taking a class.
